How to Prepare Your Roof for Hurricane Season

Here are five ways you can prepare for hurricane season this year.

1.) Check Homeowner's Insurance

You may have missed a few emails that stated that your policy was expiring- so what? Well, as you prepare for bad weather it is important to know that your home will be taken care of. Make sure your homeowners insurance policy is up to date and covers things in your area, such as hurricanes and flooding.

2.) Get a Roof Inspection

Go ahead and get that roof inspection you have been putting off! Especially if your roof is older, it may be time for some repairs or a replacement. Get that inspection today so that you do not risk losing your home during the storms.

3.) Trim Trees

High wind speeds can cause those nearby trees to damage your roof. To prevent tree damage to your roof, keep them trimmed at a reasonable distance from your roof. This will also reduce the amount of debris that piles up in the gutters.

4.) Clean Gutters

By cleaning your gutters before hurricane season, you are preventing the buildup of debris. When there is a build up, water sits and can creep into the foundation of your roof. A water-damaged roof will not protect you!

5.) Learn About Roof Straps

It may be important to find out if your existing roof boasts “hurricane straps,” which help prevent the roof from being lifted off the house during bad weather. If you are in need of a new roof and live in the Charleston area, consider finding a contractor who is able to add this extra level of protection. By adding this preventative measure, your insurance costs can be lowered.
